Chulo Pony Fall 2006 Collection
Chulo Pony Fall 2006 Collection
Those Canadians! You’ve got to hand it to them, eh? Now, it’s not only good music that they’re exporting, but they can add cool clothes to the list too!
Chulo Pony, inspired by Crystal Heald and Chris Kopeck with creative direction by John Rummen, showed it’s fall 2006 collection at L.A. Fashion Week on Wednesday night and received a warm reception.
Citing ‘The Lost Letter’ as the muse and inspiration of their eighth season collection, the designers explored themes of family history, immigration, separation and isolation.

“We became inspired by the wonder of old images, letters and places that no longer exist as well as by family histories and the ties that bind and break them,†said Crystal Heald, Chulo Pony’s Art Director and former merchandising director for singer Sarah McLachlan.
With detailing like peplums, scallops, cowls and ruching as well as puffed sleeves, ruffled and velveteen yokes, it is easy to see where the old world influence landed in this collection.
Tartan riding jackets and cropped riding pants; opera jackets and sailor pants, even the names of the clothes evoked romantic imagery.
The collection also featured a rich and romantic color palette ranging from Dior red, Old Gold, Chocolate and Cream, Dijon and Petrol Blues.
Fabrics like crocheted lace, velveteen and fur sound deliciously organic yet old fashioned and look fantastic.
A waist length jacket with a draped hood in a woven Loden mélange started the show with a unique silhouette that looked both comfy and cool.
The crocheted lace shrunken vest in ivory layered over a sequin tank top and pleated gauchos and accessorized with a draped fur collar proved a hip yet sophisticated ensemble.
The northern frock makers proved popular with their short sleeve kimono dress in ivory worn over a vintage slip with a gathered voile hem.
An unusually stylish option for the office might be the draped collar blazer with a hem flounce in midnight or petrol, layered over the high waisted pencil skirt with another hip flounce.
If coats are your thing, spy the funnel neck jacket with velveteen yokes, cuffs and belt in petrol.
One of the nicest pieces in the collection was the Dijon colored A-line blazer with detachable ruffle peplum. The charming waistline ruffle detail on this jacket was both classic, rare and beautifully tailored. The blazer was also shown in a winter white, again with the detachable peplum, this time layered over a button front sailor’s pant.
A simple yet beautifully classic uptown look could be found with the high waisted pencil skirt in antique bronze paired with the draped dolman sleeved tunic, in cameo. The look was pulled together with a pleated clutch handbag.
A chocolate and sapphire strapless tunic paired with cigarette pants or again the pattern transformed into a full wrap dress brought modern life to this ancient import: silk.
At last, Chulo Pony pulled out their old world sophisticated elegance with an olive colored fitted blazer detailed with an underarm vent-thank you!-and gathered hem, layered atop a ruffle neck tunic with petal sleeves in the same color. Completing the outfit was a fitted skirt with a flounce hem.
Canadian bred Chulo Pony has successfully soldered century old style with the sophistication of modern day and is poised to run wild!
