Fashion Flash: The Little Black Dress

It’s been nearly 75 years since Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was credited with making it a woman’s wardrobe staple, but the little black dress continues to prove that its understated and classic appeal will never go out of style.

Despite having recently given birth, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s pregnancy weight was nowhere to be seen as she showed off her svelte frame in a simple belted black dress and round-toe stilettos at Premiere magazine’s cocktail party in celebration of the best performances of 2006 in Hollywood, California.

At the 33rd Annual People’s Choice Awards, Cameron Diaz put a special spin on the classic garment in a layered black cocktail dress with reflective accents and black pumps, while Sandra Oh worked the red carpet in a tiered black dress and strappy black heels.

Across the coast, the little black dress once again took center stage at the 2006 National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards in New York: Penelope Cruz bared some skin in a strapless black cocktail dress, as did Rinko Kikuchi, who matched her black number with white accessories. Jennifer Hudson’s black dress shined its way towards the spotlight with a satin finish and cap sleeves.

For the film premiere of “We Are Marshall,” Drew Barrymore kept things loose in a draped black dress that hugged her curves in all of the right places, and Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon showed off her enviable figure in a body-hugging black cut-out dress.

Meanwhile, Jessica Biel looked both playful and sophisticated in a voluminous strapless black dress at the premiere of “Home of the Brave,” and the simple cut and fit on Emmanuelle Chriqui’s dress at the premiere of “Rocky Balboa” is proof that black isn’t just reserved for eveningwear.

Arguably the only color that’s universally flattering and slimming, the little black dress is every woman’s answer to achieving timeless elegance in a heartbeat.
